The easiest and most reliable method is to always use all +1 attack items to get a +2 attack item, to use all +2 attack items to get a +3 attack item, to use all +1 defense items to get a +2 defense item, and so on. The game lets you freely combine items across categories and bonus ranges, but this results in not always getting what you want. You can combine "scrap" (level up) items to craft them into higher level "scrap" items. CraftingĮventually you'll unlock the ability to craft items. Still, those small bonuses add up over time, so upgrading does make your progression easier. So going from level 1 to 2 will give you the same bonus as going from level 10 to 11, but cost a whole lot more. Also, like units, the ability bonuses are fixed.

Whenever you can, do upgrade the abilities you wind up using. Like units, the cost gets progressively more expensive with each level. Unlike units, abilities just cost money to upgrade. You shouldn't hit any hurdles in difficulty until rather late into the game. There is an ability to "reset" your unit to level 0, but you'll lose all the money and items you've spent on that unit. Your units will be a lot tougher if you wait.
By using only +3 items, your unit will be 3 times tougher. You will still have 2 more level ups to do. If you hold off until you have all +3 items, the unit will be level 2 and have the exact same stats. This means that if you don't wait and spend the first 3 levels upgrading everything with +1 items you'll wind up with a level 4 unit that has only +3 across all stats. So the first level for +3 across all of your stats is dirt cheap, the subsequent levels won't be. The cost for each level also quickly increases. The reason for this is that the number of times you can upgrade your units is tied to your player level. It is worth it to hold off on upgrading your units until you can do so entirely with +3 items.
You'll also eventually unlock the ability to "craft" higher tier items from lower tier ones when you level up enough. For obvious reasons, using the +3 items to upgrade your stats is a lot better than the +1 ones. There is no other bonus that you get from leveling up your unit. There's a +1, +2 and +3 variant for each. The items are different for melee and ranged units. To upgrade a unit you'll need three "scrap" items: one for attack, one for defense, and one for luck.
